Variations

Variations is our 40 wt. high-strength, high-sheen variegated thread with unique 2-3 inch color transitions that create bold, eye-catching stitches when quilted or embroidered. Unlike some variegated threads that have long, gradual color changes (6+ inches), Variations transitions quickly between colors, creating dynamic visual interest in your stitching without requiring large quilting motifs to see the full color range. The high-sheen filament polyester construction gives Variations a brilliant luster that makes colors stand out, and it's completely lint-free, so your machine stays clean while you create stunning decorative quilting. Each colorway is specifically designed to complement a range of fabric colors, from subtle blended colors to bold, multi-color contrasting colors.

Variations thread has 2-3 inch color transitions, which means the thread shifts from one color to the next every 2-3 inches of stitching. This relatively short repeat interval allows you to see the full range of colors in the thread, even with smaller quilting motifs like feathers, swirls, or geometric designs. If you're working on edge-to-edge quilting or pantographs, the color changes create beautiful movement and texture across the entire quilt. The quick transitions also mean you don't need to plan massive quilting designs to showcase the thread. Variations bring color and dimension to your work naturally, no matter the scale of your stitching.

Variations is completely lint-free. It's made from continuous high-sheen filament polyester, similar to Elite trilobal thread (though Variations has a round cross-section rather than trilobal). This means Variations produces zero lint buildup in your machine, making it perfect for longarm quilters and home machine quilters who want bold decorative stitching without constant machine cleaning. The lint-free performance, combined with the eye-catching variegated colors, makes Variations a favorite for quilters who want to add artistic flair to their work while keeping their machines running smoothly.

Use a Topstitch #90/14 needle with Variations 40 wt. thread. The Topstitch needle's large eye and deep groove protect the trilobal polyester as it passes through your machine at quilting speeds.

This needle size handles the 40 wt. weight perfectly, creating clean stitches without shredding. For longarm machines, a #14 (3.0) needle works well.

Our Titanium-coated Topstitch needles last up to 8x longer than standard needles, reducing needle changes during large quilting projects where you want consistent stitch quality throughout.

Use a neutral Precision 60 wt. in your bobbin to let your variegated Variations thread shine on top. White or off-white works for light fabric backings, black or charcoal for dark backings, and medium gray is a versatile all-purpose choice. The fine 60 wt. stays completely hidden on the quilt back while creating balanced stitches. Avoid using variegated thread in the bobbin, as it can create confusing color interactions on the back of your work. Precision prewound bobbins provide consistent tension and hold more thread, reducing bobbin changes during large quilting projects.
