Quilt Kits

Most quilt kits include fabric for the quilt top, binding, and the pattern or instructions. Backing fabric is typically not included. You'll need to purchase backing separately based on the finished quilt size (usually the quilt width plus 8 inches, times two for pieced backs, or look for 108-inch-wide backing fabric). Batting is also not included. Check each kit's description for the specific contents, as some kits vary.

Kits can be excellent for beginners because the fabric selection is done for you. Coordinating colors and prints is one of the trickier parts of quilt planning, and kits eliminate that step. Look for kits featuring simple block designs such as squares, strips, or half-square triangles. Avoid kits with complex curves, Y-seams, or intricate piecing until you're comfortable with the basics.

Kits are designed with specific fabrics, but substitutions are possible if you understand the design. Consider each fabric's role: background, accent, feature print. Swapping a background fabric for a different neutral usually works well. Replacing a feature print with a similar-scale, comparable-value print preserves the design intent. Major changes to the color scheme or value contrast may affect how the pattern reads. If you're new to quilting, making the kit as designed first helps you understand how fabric choices create the final look.

Kits range from small wall hangings (24" x 24") to king-size quilts (over 100" x 100"). Common kit Sizes include: Crib/Baby at 36" x 52", Lap/Throw at 50" x 65", Twin at 68" x 88", Queen at 88" x 96", and King at 104" x 96". Each kit description lists the finished size. Remember to buy backing fabric 4-8 inches larger than the finished quilt dimensions on all sides for quilting ease.
