Quilt & Bag Patterns - Frequently Asked Questions
Our patterns range from beginner to advanced. Each pattern lists its skill level in the description. Beginner patterns use basic shapes (squares, rectangles, half-square triangles) with straightforward construction. Intermediate patterns may include more pieces, precise points, or techniques like paper piecing. Advanced patterns feature complex blocks, curves, Y-seams, or intricate layouts. If you're unsure, review the pattern descriptions for required techniques and choose patterns that match the skills you're comfortable with or ready to learn.
Yes, all patterns include fabric requirements, including yardage for each fabric in the design. Requirements are typically listed for multiple quilt sizes (baby, lap, twin, queen, king). Yardage calculations assume 42 inches of usable fabric width after removing selvages. If your fabric is narrower, you may need slightly more. Patterns also specify any additional materials required, such as batting size, backing yardage, and binding.
Cutting mistakes happen to every quilter. If you've cut a piece too small, set it aside for another project and cut a fresh piece. This is why many quilters buy an extra quarter or half-yard beyond the pattern requirements. If you've cut fabric from a kit or limited yardage, check whether the piece can be placed in a less visible spot, or substitute a coordinating fabric for that element. Some "mistakes" become design features: an unexpected fabric placement can add interest. Keep scraps organized for future scrap quilts, where variety is the goal.
