Frequently Asked Questions
Dream Seam - Frequently Asked Questions
Here's what makes Dream Seam special: it's our 3-ply 50 wt. thread, which means you're getting 50% more thread than typical 2-ply threads, resulting in a stronger thread. But here's the cool part - it's twisted so tightly that it's nearly the same fine diameter as other 50 wt. 2-ply threads (that are weaker because they only have two plies). So you get extra strength without any added bulk in your seams. This is a game-changer for piecing and sewing. Your seams will lie beautifully flat without puckering, even when you're working with intricate blocks or foundation paper piecing. We make it from 100% Egyptian-grown extra-long staple cotton, then mercerize and gas it for that smooth, low-lint performance quilters rave about. It stitches effortlessly through your fabric. Quilters tell us Dream Seam is the thread that finally solved their bulky seam problems.
You can absolutely use Dream Seam for both piecing and quilting. As a 50 wt. thread, it's ideal for piecing quilt tops because it creates strong, flat seams without bulk. Many quilters also use Dream Seam for quilting when they want to use a cotton thread that remains visible when stitched, without overpowering the quilt pattern or fabric design. If you're quilting with an edge-to-edge pantograph or a free-motion design and want a cotton thread with subtle texture, a matte finish, and a blending thread presence, Dream Seam is perfect. For bolder, more decorative quilting where you want stitches to really stand out, quilters prefer a 40 wt. thread like Majestic. Think of Dream Seam as your versatile workhorse thread that handles both construction and finishing with beautiful, consistent results.
Great observation! Here's why: the 3-ply version, available in cones and spools, is your powerhouse for piecing, sewing, and quilting. The extra-tight twist gives you 50% more thread (vs. a 2-ply thread) without adding bulk, making it perfect for strong, flat seams. The 2-ply prewound bobbins are explicitly designed for bobbin use and wound with ideal tension for consistent, even stitches. We can wind more 2-ply Dream Seam on the bobbin, where tensile strength is not critical as a top thread. Many quilters (ourselves included!) love using the 3-ply on top with 2-ply prewounds in the bobbin. It's a match made in quilting heaven - you get perfectly balanced stitches. Both versions utilize the same high-quality 100% Egyptian-grown extra-long staple cotton, optimized for different purposes.
For best results with Dream Seam 50 wt. thread, use a Topstitch #80/12 needle. The Topstitch needle style has a larger eye and a deeper groove than a Universal needle, which protects the thread from excessive friction and helps prevent breakage and skipped stitches. Our Titanium-coated Topstitch Needles have a thin coating of material that keeps the point sharper, up to 8x longer than standard nickel-plated needles.
Absolutely. Dream Seam prewound bobbins work beautifully with any top thread, not just Dream Seam. Many quilters use Dream Seam 50 wt. cotton prewounds in the bobbin with 40 wt. quilting threads like Majestic or Machine Quilting Thread on top. The 50 wt. cotton in the bobbin creates a balanced stitch without adding bulk on the back of your quilt. Dream Seam prewound bobbins are available in Class 15 (fits most home machines) and hold significantly more thread than self-wound bobbins, so you'll spend less time changing bobbins and more time quilting.
