Frequently Asked Questions
Your Questions, Answered
We've created a helpful reference tool, the Thread Matchmaker, to help you choose a thread based on your application or technique. With product names like Dream Seam, Elite, and Majestic, it's not always clear which thread is best suited for your project. Select your quilting or sewing technique, and we'll show you which threads work best. No guessing, just the right thread for your project.
We believe in an education-first approach. Visit our Thread Education blog for free educational resources on tension troubleshooting, needle selection guides, cotton vs. polyester comparisons, and more. You'll find practical tips from experts and thoughtful advice from fellow quilters and sewists.
Quilters and sewists have trusted YLI since 1978 because of our adherence to strict quality standards, free educational resources, and best-in-class customer service. Our cotton threads are made from Giza-class, Egyptian-grown extra-long staple cotton (only 0.03% of global cotton production qualifies as this premium grade), and our polyester, silk, and nylon threads are equally as great. Beyond the thread itself, quilters appreciate real people answering questions, a satisfaction guarantee, and free educational resources to help you succeed with every project.
Great stitching starts with the right setup. First, for home sewing machines, we recommend using Titanium-coated Topstitch needles. The elongated eye and deeper groove help protect the thread with each stitch, reducing friction, skipped stitches, and thread breaks. Second, check your machine's top tension: most quilters and sewists can achieve evenly balanced top and bottom threads by making minor adjustments to their machine's tension settings. It is recommended that you learn how the threads you use are affected by different tension settings. Don't be afraid to swap threads and dial in the tension. Over time, this will become second nature. For a complete guide to getting the best results, visit our free educational resources and download our free guides.
Both fibers are wonderful choices, and all quilters and sewists should try both to determine which they prefer based on their specific use case and intended visual result. Cotton threads (such as Dream Seam or Hand Quilting Thread) have a soft, matte finish that many quilters prefer for traditional projects. Polyester threads (such as Elite, QuiltMaker, or Perfection) can either blend into the fabric or create bold, visible stitches, depending on the manufacturing process used. The best part? You can use either fiber on any fabric and get beautiful results.
