If you've ever experienced the frustrations of thread fraying, shredding, or breaking on you, this hour with Bob is going to feel like a long exhale. The video below is from Bob's Thread Mastery seminar, live at the Great Wisconsin Quilt Show, where he walks you through the top three solutions that solve 98% of the problems most quilters encounter: choosing a quality thread, pairing it with the right needle, and balancing your tension.
Here's what Bob walks you through:
- Half of every thread headache starts with thread quality. Bob breaks down what actually makes a cotton thread great (Giza-class Egyptian-grown extra-long staple cotton fibers, an extra-tight twist, mercerizing, and gassing) and explains why a label that just says "100% cotton" tells you almost nothing on its own.
- Polyester threads won't cut your fabric. It's one of the notorious myths Bob hears often, and he tested it the only way that made sense: he called Hanes. They sew their 100% cotton T-shirts with polyester thread, and those seams outlast the shirt. You can piece with cotton, polyester, or both.
- The Topstitch needle is what home machine quilters rave about. Its deeper groove, larger eye, and light-sharp point keep threads from shredding, even specialty threads such as Metallics and Invisible Threads, which can otherwise snap and shred at the needle. On a home machine, using a Topstitch needle can solve about 25% of sewing problems on its own.
- Thread storage is simpler than the internet would have you believe. No freezer. No sealed containers. Just keep your cones and spools out of direct sunlight and away from heat vents, and the cotton in your stash today will still be in excellent, usable condition in years to come.
