Trilobal Polyester Threads - Frequently Asked Questions

What is a trilobal polyester thread?

Trilobal polyester thread is a type of filament polyester characterized by its unique triangle-shaped cross-section. (tri = 3, lobal = sides). This shape reflects light more magnificently than traditional round fibers, resulting in a vibrant, high-sheen appearance that makes your quilting, embroidery, and decorative stitching projects shine.
The triangular cross-section of each fiber reflects light from multiple angles. Unlike coated or metallic threads, the sheen is inherent to the fiber structure, ensuring it won't wear off or fade over time.

How is trilobal polyester different from regular polyester thread?

Standard polyester threads usually come in a round shape and are available in spun, corespun, or filament styles. Trilobal polyester is a special type of filament with three flat sides, twisted into a round thread that is loved by quilters and embroiderers.

Can I use trilobal polyester thread in my home sewing machine?

Yes! Trilobal threads work beautifully on home machines for quilting and decorative stitching. We recommend slightly loosening your tension and using a Topstitch #90/14 needle. These threads are naturally lint-free, and our Elite and Variations are made from a special high-sheen, high-strength formulation. For optimal stitching, use Precision 60 wt. thread in the bobbin.
