Hand Quilting Thread

There is no rule stating you must use cotton thread. However, many hand quilters prefer cotton thread, partly because of its heritage and natural matte finish, which adds a subtle texture to your quilt without a distracting sheen or reflection when stitched.

A very thin wax or starch coating, usually called glaze (you may see a thread labeled 'glazed cotton'), is applied to the thread during the finishing process as a barrier to reduce friction. Think of glaze as a strength-boosting, lint-reducing agent. This coating enables the thread to glide effortlessly through multiple layers of fabric and batting, preventing knotting or tangling. Please keep in mind that the same coating that makes hand quilting a joy can clog your machine. Glazed threads are meant only for handwork.

Most quilters agree that a 40 wt. cotton thread is the go-to for hand quilting. Our 40 wt. Hand Quilting Thread provides the perfect balance of visibility and finesse. It is substantial enough to highlight your quilting design yet fine enough to blend into the fabric when you want a subtle texture. Hand quilters love 40 wt. threads because they work well, even with small needles for precise stitching, while resisting fraying from repeated pulls.

It comes down to personal preference. Most hand quilters agree that a length of eighteen inches is long enough to find your stitching rhythm, yet short enough to glide through the quilt sandwich without excess friction or knots. Cutting your thread into roughly 18-24-inch sections ensures every pull is smooth and even, allowing you to focus on the flow of each stitch rather than stopping to untangle or conceal frayed ends. If you don't cut your thread into manageable lengths, it will twist and spring back on itself, making it harder to stitch evenly.

Cut the thread to approximately 18-24 inches. Any longer, and you'll experience excess friction from repeatedly pulling it through the quilt sandwich. Our glazed coating helps prevent the thread from knotting, but thread length also matters.

Always pull slowly and steadily rather than jerking the thread through your fabric. If you feel a knot forming, stop immediately and gently work it out before continuing.
